Free show TONITE at the Baltimore Comedy Factory

 diversity_nbc.jpg

Tonite I’ll be part of a very cool (and very FREE) show at The Comedy Factory in Baltimore.

NBC, in conjunction with their Stand-up for Diversity Initiative, is hosting a showcase of some of the best comics in the area tonite (Oct. 13) at the Baltimore Comedy Factory. It’s the semifinal round of their annual contest and the grand prize is a biggie!!! THE SHOW IS FREE, so come out tonite at 8 pm to see some of the hottest comics from MD, DC, Philly, etc.  We need behinds in the seats plus it’ll be a great show — hahaha… and even if it weren’t gonna be a great show, what are you gonna do? Ask for your money back ;)

I participated in this competition last year and made it to this same ’semfinal’ round in NYC but didn’t advance to the finals. So I’m crossing my fingers I’ll do better this year ;)

Hope to see some of y’all out tonite!!! Here are the deets:

T Minus 2 Weeks to Eagles training camp

Camp begins two weeks from today.

As always I am hopeful, but I wouldn’t be a true Philly fan if I didn’t express at least a little skepticism. Planning to trip up on the 27th to catch a practice. Want to see Asante in that defense so I know how excited to get (or not to get) about the upcoming season. It’s crazy how you can have such strong feelings against a player when he’s on a rival team (Screw Asante Samuel!!!), but be so excited once he’s traded to your squad (Yo, you hear we picked up Asante Samuel???). At least we don’t have to worry about him intercepting Donovan or A.J. this season.

So excited! THIS year IS next year!!! Maybe ;)

Last Comic Standing, Pt. I

lcs_screenphoto.gif

Thanks so much for all your e-mail and text messages!!! The Nashville episode of Last Comic Standing aired on last nite and I was on it. Hooray!!! I was working so I didn’t get to see the entire show, but I’m sure I’ll be able to see the whole thing online soon. It was my first national TV appearance so I was geeked.

I’m hella sleepy right now, but as so many friends and family had no idea I even went out for the show, I thought I’d try and give a quick (yeah, right) recap of how things went down.

Back in January the manager at the DC Improv called and asked me to come do a guest spot at the club in a few weeks. I had never been asked to do a guest spot so far in advance of a show, so I was suspicious. But she didn’t let on that anything was up. But when I got to the club that nite in February, I noticed that there was a film crew there. So now I’m real curious but still no one was talking. All they told me was that I needed to stay til the end of the show.

So in between the emcee (good bud Herbie Gill) and the feature (other bud Jon Mumma) me and third good bud Jason Weems each do a 5-minute guest spot. When the show was over Herbie calls us back on stage and while we’re up there, Bill Bellamy comes from the back of the club, hops up on the stage and tells me and Jason that we just had a ‘Surprise LCS Audition’ and that NBC was flying us to Nashville to compete in the showcase round.

So about a month later, J and I fly down to Nashville. They put us up in a nice hotel and then that evening they shuttled us to the Zanies for the showcase. It was really cool because I got to meet some great comics whose work I’d admired from afar. It seems like they decided, for whatever reason, not to use the footage they shot in any of the Secret Auditions (from what I understand they went to several additional cities) which kinda stinks. Because I remember taping a fun segment in Nashville about how I didn’t have to camp outside and wait in line all day.  Oh well.

I probably should have blogged about this and saved it until now, because the details of the day are getting mad fuzzy. But suffice it to say, the showcase went well, and I got a red envelope. Hooray!

Las Vegas semifinals here I come! Stay tuned for more LCS posts and watch me in the semis!!!

P.S. If you TiVo’d the show and can get it onto a DVD, please let me know! I’d love to have it.

Why am I awake?

I had a pretty busy week and I’m not working tonite. Why the heck am I awake? I promised myself I’d sleep all day and I’ve been up since like 8:30. On Wednesday I drove up to B’more to judge and close out the Funniest Person in Baltimore Contest. I passed the crown (of course by crown I mean fat ass check) to funnyman Larry Poon.

After that I drove up to Jersey to crash with family for the nite. Got there around 2am. Then in the morning I headed into the city for an audition for the NBC Stand-Up for Diversity initiative at Caroline’s. I had an appointment for the 2pm callback and it went pretty well. I got to hook up with my good buddy and hilarious comic Diana Saez, who I’ve been missing terribly since she and her hubby moved up to NYC in August. (Finally got it D, Sam’s a Kiwi, and I’m allergic to kiwi fruit :)

Diana and I caught dinner after her audition and I got called back for the 7:30 pm showcase. There were 11 comics that were called back and that show went pretty well too. There was tons of industry in the crowd and while it wasn’t perfect, I was happy with my set. So now I wait to hear if I made it to the finals. NBC will send the finalists to LA to showcase for even more industry folks out there and prizes include a one-year holding deal with the network, commercial deals, a chance to tour with the NBC Diversity NACA touring group, etc. So it would be absolutely awesome.

So after the show I hung out for a little and then headed back to DC. Got back here around 4am, slept for what seemed like 30 seconds and then started my Friday. Friday nite I did a benefit show for the Urban Leadership Institute in Baltimore, which is headed by the husband of fellow comic Meshelle Foreman. It was held at the Walters Museum in Baltimore, which I’d never been to before. The audience was great and it was a great cause.

I know a lot of folks are waiting for part II of the “Worst Date Ever. Ever.” blog. So I promise it’ll be next. I feel as if its going to be anti-climactic. You’re expecting it to be worse than the first part. I’m letting you know now. He didn’t top the alley pee. But still I marveled at his nerve. So stay tuned once more… Til then.
